Nursing Management for MSAFP(Maternal Serum Alpha-Fetoprotein) Test

Abstract

|
Each pregnant woman should receive individualized counseling before MSAFP testing is initiated. And counseling should be objective and nondirective. Factors affecting MSAFP level interpretation include gestational age, maternal weight, a history of maternal DM, previous history of an affected infant, race, and multiple gestation. Therefore MSAFP testing should be performed with appropriate clinical data provided, such as the race of the patient, previous history of an affected infant, insulin need, maternal weight, and gestational age, so that the results can be accurately interpreted. If a pregnant woman has an elevated MSAFP result, a pregnant woman´s level of anxiety will be increased by the need for further testing. Therefore counseling prior to further definitive testing is necessary for the patient in understanding and coping with subsequent findings, whether normal or abnormal.
